NY 29th Senate District Race Preview: Serrano Vs. Carmichael
The 29th Senate District encompasses East Harlem and parts of the Bronx.

NEW YORK CITY — New York's 29th Senate District has been represented by State Senator Jose Serrano since 2013. On Nov.5, voters will decide between the incumbent candidate and Republican challenger Tanya Carmichael.
The 29th Senate District encompasses East Harlem and parts of the Bronx.
Serrano previously represented District 28 in the New York State Senate from 2005 to 2013. In 2022, Serrano won an uncontested race for District 29.

Serrano's prior professional experience includes being a member of Community Board 4 and a member of New York City Council, District 17, from 2001 to 2004.
In the senate, Serrano serves on the Senate Aging Committee, Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation Committee, Senate Environmental Conservation Committee, Senate Social Services Committee, Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee and Women's Issues Committee.

Republican Challenger
This will be Carmichael's seventh attempt at running for elected office. In 2023, Carmichael ran unsuccessfully against Democrat Althea Stevens for New York City Council District 16. In 2022, Carmichael lost to incumbent Latoya Joyner in the general election for New York State Assembly District 77. Carmichael also to lost Joyner for the same seat in 2020 and 2018.
"If I am elected, my top priorities will be tackling crime, addressing inflation, and ensuring wheelchair accessibility for all. Crime rates have been on the rise in our community, and it is crucial that we take immediate action to create a safer environment for our residents, Carmichael said in a NYC Votes video.
"By prioritizing the safety and well-being of our community, we can create a thriving environment where everyone feels secure. My other priority will be committed to addressing the issue of inflation that affects the cost of living for our residents. I strongly believe in the importance of wheelchair accessibility in our community."
