NY 73rd Assembly District Race Preview: Bores Vs. Gupta

NEW YORK CITY — New York's Assembly District 73 has been represented by Alex Bores since 2022, on Nov. 5 voters will decide between the incumbent assembly member or Republican challenger Awadhesh Gupta.

Bores defeated David Casavis in the 2022 general election, 73.7 percent to 26.3 percent.

Bores was born on the East Side of Manhattan and earned a bachelor's degree from Cornell University in 2013 and a graduate degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2020. Before running for public office, Bores worked as an engineer.

In the state assembly, Bores serves on the Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Committee, Consumer Affairs and Protection Committee, Corporations, Authorities and Commissions Committee, Insurance Committee and Science & Technology Committee.

In his first term, Bores passed six measures into law, including common sense bills that protected workers' intellectual property, reduced the shortage of optometrists, raised fines on telemarketers, and created new judges to reduce court backlogs, according to his campaign website.

Bores has received endorsements from the Communications Workers of America, Council of School Supervisors & Administrators (CSA), District Council 37 AFSCME AFL-CIO, Humane Society Legislative Fund, League of Humane Voters of New York, New York Immigration Coalition Action, New York League of Conservation Voters, New York State Nurses Association, New York State Public Employees Federation, Planned Parenthood Empire State, Run for Something, Stonewall Democratic Club of New York City and Working Families Party, among others.

Bores' campaign issues include public safety, housing, the environment, technology and education and child care.

The incumbent assembly member has said in the past he wants to modernize court systems so that prosecutors, judges, and public defenders can better assess individual cases.

In addition, he has called for universal day lighting, complete streets redesigns, and cracking down on ghost plates in an effort to improve safety on city streets.

Bores said the city needs to build housing but also repair dilapidated vacant apartments to get them up to code.

When it comes to education, Bores has said he would support gifted and talented programs in NYC, establish funds for under 3 child care statewide and make CUNY tuition-free.

Republican Challenger

This will be Gupta's second attempt at running for public office. In 2022, he ran as the Republican challenger in the New York State Senate District 28 election against incumbent Liz Kruger.

Kruger defeated Gupta 77.5 percent to 22.4 percent.

Gupta works as a general internal medicine physician in Manhattan.
