NY Airports See Cancellations And Delays Friday As FAA Flight Reductions Take Effect

Travelers experienced the first round of delays after a reduction in flights at major airports. See how many NY flights were impacted.

NEW YORK, NY — As the government shutdown looms into its second month, travelers flying through JFK, Newark, and LaGuardia airports saw the first reductions in flights Friday, as well as an increase in wait times, and an uptick in delays.

All three of major New York airports will be impacted, including John F. Kennedy Airport, Laguardia, and Newark, according to a list posted by the Associated Press. The three airports are among the 40 slated to impacted by the FAA's capacity cuts and deemed as high-volume airports.

As of 3:45 p.m. on Friday, and according to FlightAware, there were a total of 1,409 cancellations and 18,253 delays amongst all flights. Thursday's total number was 24,155 delays and 665 cancellations.

Flights originating from New York Friday saw delays, according to FlightAware, including:

  • 24 cancellations and 52 delays at LaGuardia
  • 21 cancellations and 76 delays at Kennedy
  • 45 cancellations and 118 delays at Newark

The FAA's capacity cuts have been phased in, which started Friday at 6 a.m., and airlines will reach the full 10 percent in cuts by 6 a.m. on Nov. 14, according to the Federal Aviation Administration's emergency order issued on Thursday.
