Here are the top five stories in New York City today:
- Public Advocate Jumaane Williams released a list of 2022's "100 worst landlords" with the most housing violations yesterday, stating that "across the entire list, there were a staggering 69,018 violations, nearly a 30 percent increase from the previous year." The worst building in the city was in Middle Village, Queens and had 505 violations. (New York City Patch)
- State lawmakers are set to decide on Thursday whether or not they should get a pay raise —from $110,000 to $142,000 — which would make them the highest-paid state lawmakers in the country. A bill to approve the raise would also limit their ability to make other forms of income, except for from investments and pensions. (Spectrum New York 1)
- A second asylum seeker who recently arrived in New York City committed suicide at a Queens shelter last week, according to reports. The first death was a young mother in September. (New York City Patch)
- Citing a 'tridemic' of diseases this holiday season Mayor Eric Adams released updated public health guidelines for New Yorkers, including mask wearing indoors and getting tested before gathering with family. (AMNY)
- A community fridge nonprofit in The Bronx has come under scrutiny from local mutual aid groups, who criticized it for not sharing more than half-million dollars raised over the past year, including donations from real estate developers. (THE CITY)
