NYC Is America's Coffee Shop Capital, Study Says

New York City has more coffee shops and cafes than any place else in the U.S.

NEW YORK — This could be why New Yorkers are so high-strung. The Big Apple is the nation's No. 1 coffee city in part because it has a higher concentration of coffee shops than any place else, a new WalletHub study says.

The personal finance website ranked the 100 largest U.S. cities based on 14 factors of "coffee lover-friendliness," such as the average price of a cappuccino and the share of adult coffee drinkers.

New York City beat out Seattle, the birthplace of Starbucks, for the No. 1 overall spot. The city claimed the top rank in two key categories: the per-capita number of coffee shops, coffee houses and cafés; and the per-capita number of "affordable" coffee establishments with high ratings.

The city has no shortage of places to surf the web with a cup of joe — it ranked No. 1 for the number of coffee shops with free WiFi per capita, according to WalletHub. Pastries are also plentiful, as the city also took the top spot for the per-capita number of donut shops.

Close to 13 percent of adults drink coffee in the city (23rd in the nation), and the average household here spends nearly $132 a year on coffee (14th in the nation). But New York also has the nation's 15th most expensive cappuccinos with an average price of $4.40, WalletHub found.

Coffee lovers would also find themselves at home on the West Coast — San Francisco, Portland and Los Angeles followed Seattle to round out WalletHub's top five coffee cities.
