NYC Community Health Centers Get $3M In Coronavirus Aid: Senators

Health centers and public hospitals will receive supplemental funding from the federal Department of Health to aid in coronavirus efforts.

NEW YORK, NY — Health centers and organizations providing coronavirus treatment and support at the community level in New York City will receive nearly $3 million in additional funding from the federal Department of Health and Human Services, New York Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced Wedesnday.

The federal funds will be awarded through the creation of an emergency fund for community health centers nationwide, the senators said. Gillibrand first called for the creation of such a fund in early March when coronavirus was just beginning to begin its spread in the United States.

"New Yorkers are at the epicenter of COVID-19 and we need to support our frontline workers in this fight," Gillibrand said in a statement. "This federal and state funding will help provide health centers with the resources needed to treat patients and save lives. I will continue fighting in the Senate for the resources our health care workers need during this pandemic."

Unlike major hospitals, community health centers often receive little federal funding for public health emergencies, Gillibrand said in a statement. The senator said that these centers often serve as much-needed healthcare options for the "most vulnerable" populations in society.
