NYC July 4 Macy's Fireworks Plan Revealed For 2020

NEW YORK CITY — The city is getting a "new normal" firework display for July 4 even as it cracks down on a 4000 percent spike in illegal firework complaints, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Tuesday.

"This is not like what you're seeing with the illegal fireworks, you'll know this is a very professional, beautiful show," said de Blasio. "Different, but very special."

The 5-minute Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks shows will take place over several nights across the five boroughs to decrease crowding amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, said the mayor.

Shows are slated to take place between June 29 and July 1 with a July 4 grand finale at the Empire State Building that will air on NBC, de Blasio said.

The finale will include tape from the previous nights' displays, music and tributes to essential workers who got New York City through the past three months, de Blasio said.

While the mayor would not specify where the firework displays would take place, a sharp-eyed New Yorker spotted the Macy's fireworks barge on the coast of Brooklyn.

This announcement came as de Blasio announced a special task force to crack down on illegal fireworks that have been plaguing the city for weeks.

The explosive din spurred a parade of drivers to line up outside Gracie Mansion Monday night to lay on their horns and create a similar experience on the Upper East Side .

"If we can't sleep, Mr. Mayor, you won't sleep," said City Council member Chaim Deutsch in video posted to Twitter. "We need to end these chaotic fireworks."
