NYC Labor Day Travel: MTA Releases Long Weekend Schedule
Here's everything you need to know about getting the hell out of New York City on Labor Day weekend.
NEW YORK CITY — The last three-day weekend of the summer is nigh, let's honor a time-honored New York City tradition and get the hell outta here.
Don't own a car? You too can flee, with help from extra service from the MTA.

Long Island Railroad
The LIRR will operate two early getaway trains Friday on the Ronkonkoma and Babylon branches.
- A 2:55 p.m. train from Penn Station to Ronkonkoma.
- A 2:38 p.m. from Penn Station to Babylon, making all local Babylon stops.
On Saturday and Sunday, the LIRR will operate on a normal Saturday schedule.

On Monday, the LIRR will operate on a weekend/holiday schedule with Montauk Branch trains running on a Sunday schedule. The 1:17 p.m., 4:18 p.m., 6:22 p.m. and 8:22 p.m. trains from Montauk to Jamaica, and the 3:25 p.m. train from Southampton to Jamaica will run Monday instead of Sunday.
On Tuesday, there will be a 7:18 a.m. train from Montauk to Hunterspoint Ave.
Metro-North Railroad
East of Hudson: Extra trains will operate Thursday and Friday on Metro-North’s three East of Hudson lines.
Hudson Line: Metro-North Railroad will operate three early-getaway trains on Thursday and Friday:
- The 1:18 p.m. train from Grand Central to Poughkeepsie will stop at Harlem/125th St., operate express to Croton-Harmon and make all stops to Poughkeepsie, except Manitou.
- The 1:50 p.m. train from Grand Central will stop at Harlem/125th St. and make all stops to Croton-Harmon. Hudson Rail Link buses will meet at Spuyten Duyvil and Riverdale.
- The 2:18 p.m. train from Grand Central will stop at Harlem/125th St., operate express to Croton-Harmon and make all stops to Poughkeepsie, except Manitou.
Because of lower ridership in the late afternoon, the 5:30 p.m. and 6:11 p.m. trains to Poughkeepsie will not operate.
- Hudson Rail Link buses will meet the 1:50 p.m. early-getaway train at Spuyten Duyvil and Riverdale for their routes throughout the neighborhoods.
- There will be two early-getaway Haverstraw-Ossining ferries, one boat meeting the 2:20 p.m. local and 2:43 p.m. express from Grand Central and a second boat meeting the 3:21 p.m. local departures from Grand Central.
- There will be three early-getaway Newburgh-Beacon ferries, meeting the 2:43 p.m., 3:18 p.m. and 3:48 p.m. departures from Grand Central. Newburgh-Beacon ferry customers who normally ride the 5:30 p.m. Poughkeepsie express from Grand Central should ride the 5:32 p.m. Poughkeepsie express, which will connect with the ferry at Beacon.
Harlem Line: Metro-North Railroad will operate two early-getaway trains:
- The 1:16 p.m. train from Grand Central will stop at Harlem/125 St., operate express to White Plains and make all stops to Southeast, except Mount Pleasant
- The 1:52 p.m. train from Grand Central will stop at Harlem/125 St. and make all stops to North White Plains.
The 5:27 p.m. train to Southeast will not operate.
New Haven Line: There will be three early-getaway trains and one service change:
- The 2:28 p.m. train from Grand Central will stop at Harlem/125 St., operate express to Westport and select stops to New Haven
- The 2:56 p.m. train from Grand Central will stop at Harlem/125 St., operate express to Larchmont and make all stops to Stamford
- The 3:27 p.m. train from Grand Central will stop at Harlem/125 St., operate express to Westport and select stops to New Haven
- The 5:18 p.m. train to New Rochelle, Larchmont, Mamaroneck and Harrison will not operate. Instead, the 5:21 p.m. train from Grand Central which stops at Mt. Vernon East, Pelham and New Rochelle, will be extended to Harrison making stops at Larchmont and Mamaroneck.
The 5:41 p.m. and 6:07 p.m. New Haven express trains will not operate.
Metro-North's East of Hudson lines will operate a normal Saturday and a Sunday schedule on both Sunday and Monday. Normal weekday service resumes Tuesday.
West of Hudson
Pascack Valley Line: On Friday, customers who ride the 5:25 p.m. connecting train from New York Penn Station to Secaucus Junction to board the 5:43 p.m. Pascack Valley Line train to Spring Valley, arriving at 6:26 p.m., please note that the connecting train will depart New York Penn Station 5 minutes earlier, at 5:20 p.m. instead of at 5:25 p.m.
Port Jervis Line: Metro-North will operate a normal schedule on the Port Jervis Line on Friday. On Monday, an extra train departs Port Jervis at 4:05 p.m., making all stops through Suffern, then express to Secaucus Junction and Hoboken, arriving at Hoboken at 6:24 p.m., with a connecting train at Secaucus Junction to New York Penn Station arriving New York at 6:33 p.m.
MTA Bridges and Tunnels
Routine maintenance and construction at all MTA Bridges and Tunnels will stop 1 p.m. Thursday.
Daytime scheduled maintenance requiring full lane closures will be suspended from 1 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Tuesday.
New York City Transit
Starting Wednesday at 9:45 p.m., the M line be shut down for five days for switch replacement work. M service will resume 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept 5, only between Middle Village- Metropolitan Av and 45-50th Streets-Rockefeller Center. M service between Forest Hills –71 Av and 45-50 Streets-Rockefeller Center remains suspended due to ongoing track replacement work in the 63rd St tunnel.
On Saturday and Sunday, the subway will run on a regular weekend schedule. On Labor Day, the subway will run on a Sunday schedule. That means there will be no service on the B, W and Z trains; no express 6 or 7 trains; and no express F trains in Brooklyn.
New York City buses will run on a regular weekend schedule Saturday and Sunday. On Labor Day, buses will run on a Sunday schedule.
Access-A-Ride Paratransit
Access-A-Ride customers may make reservations 7 days a week from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. by calling Access-A-Ride at (877) 337-2017 or (718) 393-4999 and pressing prompt #2, online, or via the MYmta app.
