Here are the top five stories today in New York City:
- Construction on a 26-story tower at 250 Water St. in the Financial District was halted last week after a judge found the developer, the Howard Hughes Corporation, had made a "quid pro quo" with the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission, by advising them how to take "political cover" from the proposal. The Commission had rejected proposals to build towers in the historic district in the past but approved this most recent one in 2020. (AMNY)
- Mayor Eric Adams visited El Paso, Texas, over the weekend, one of the places from where migrants have been sent on buses to New York City during the past several months. There, he met with El Paso's Mayor and called on the federal government to provide assistance to states like New York. (CBS New York)
- Williamsburg residents raised concerns of gentrification when a street sign reading "Graham Av.-Av of Puerto Rico" was taken down and replaced with one labeled simply "Graham Av" on Friday. The change was evidently a mistake and was later corrected by the Department of Transportation. (Gothamist)
- An NYPD police captain was ousted from his job after investigators found he was paid for more than 400 hours of work that he didn't do, adding up to over $60,000. A judge and department prosecutor had recommended the 45-year-old, 19-year veteran officer be fired, but Commissioner Keechant Sewell allowed him to retire. (Subscription/New York Daily News)
- Gov. Kathy Hochul is rallying politicians — including three NYC Congress Members — in support of her pick for the State Supreme Court, Hector LaSalle. At least a dozen Democrats have publicly announced they would vote against him, citing his past decisions as anti-union and anti-abortion. (Gothamist)
