Beyonce, OJ Simpson, Jesus Christ Got Votes To Become NYC Mayor
Michael Bloomberg and Mickey Mouse were also among winners of write-in votes.

NEW YORK, NY — What do Spike Lee, Beyonce and Obi-Wan Kenobi have in common? At least one person wanted them to be mayor of New York City. They were among dozens of people — real and fictional, living and dead — who got write-in votes in the Nov. 7 mayoral election, according to official results the city Board of Elections published Wednesday.
Mayor Bill de Blasio easily won a second term, winning about 760,000 votes to Republican state Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis' roughly 317,000.
But many New Yorkers presumably weren't impressed with any of the candidates in a sleepy election season, so they wrote in their own.

A fair number of voters wanted former Mayor Michael Bloomberg back for a fourth term. De Blasio's predecessor got at least 972 write-in votes.
Bloomberg wasn't the only former mayor to win votes. Rudy Giuliani got a dozen. Some voters wanted to resurrect Fiorello La Guardia (nine votes), John Lindsay (one vote) or Ed Koch (one vote) — all three of whom are dead.

Lots of write-in voters looked to celebrities to lead America's biggest city. New York Yankees superstar Aaron Judge got 10 votes. Knicks center Kristaps Porzingis got 11, though a couple people struggled to spell his name. Beyonce got five votes and Rihanna got one, as did Lady Gaga — under her real name, Stefani Joanne Germonatta.
Some New Yorkers apprently had so little faith in the democratic process that they wanted fictional characters to run the city. Mickey Mouse got 15 votes. Spongebob Squarepants and Obi-Wan Kenobi each got one.
Here are some other highlights from the write-in candidates to take over City Hall. See the full list for yourself here.
- Hillary Clinton (129 votes)
- Donald Trump (22 votes)
- Jesus Christ (3 votes)
- O.J. Simpson (1 vote)
- Nicholas Cage (1 vote)
- WNYC's Brian Lehrer (12 votes)
- NY1's Errol Louis (6 votes)
