NYC Memorial Day Weekend Weather: Beachgoers Could Be Disappointed

NEW YORK CITY — New York City's beach bums might want to make other plans this Memorial Day weekend.

Sunny skies this Saturday and Sunday will be paired with less-than-ideal highs — for beachgoers, at least — of roughly 70 degrees each day, according to the National Weather Service's forecast.

But don't fret, the sandy fun outlook will improve on Memorial Day itself.

"Partly sunny, with a high near 77," Monday's forecast states.

New Yorkers adventurous enough to head into the water will also have another potential problem to face: rip tides.

The rip risk Friday and Saturday is listed as "moderate" for Coney Island and the Queens beaches of Rockaway and Jacob Riis Park, according to the National Weather Service.

"Rip current activity will likely be enhanced in vicinity of groins, jetties, and piers," the service's surf forecast warns.

New Yorkers who don't have the beach in their plans, however, likely will find the weekend a pleasant one, although it won't exactly be fitting the unofficial start of summer.
