NYC Mom Charged In Death Of Daughter Found Dead In Bathtub

NEW YORK CITY — A 26-year-old mother has been arrested and charged after her 6-year-old daughter was found dead submerged in a bathtub this past weekend, police said.

Karla Espinal, 26, has been charged with assault and reckless endangerment in connection to the Friday incident.

Police responded to a house in Cypress Hills on Elton Street around 1:30 p.m. where they found the 6-year-old girl unresponsive in a tub of water.

The victim was taken to Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Espinal allegedly told police that she was "baptizing her daughter," according to multiple media reports.

Additionally, police disclosed that the 6-year-old girl had blood clots in her eyes, indicating a possible struggle.

Espinal is being held in jail without bail.
