Here are the top five stories today in New York City:

  1. In a preliminary vote last night, NYC's Rental Guidelines Board proposed increases of 2-5 percent for rent stabilized tenants with one-year leases and 4-7 percent increase for tenants with two-year leases. During the meeting, protestors leapt onto the stage where board members were seated, chanting "Shame on you," and "Rent rollback!" (New York City Patch)
  2. Texas may soon resume sending asylum seekers in buses to New York City and other cities across the country, Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement without further details. It hasn't been independently verified whether that's true, and it's been months since NYC received such buses carrying asylum seekers. (Gothamist)
  3. New York State is holding on to billions of dollars in "lost" or otherwise unclaimed money. Here's how to find out if you are owed anything, whether it be from an old utility deposit, an uncashed check, or a trust fund, and how to claim it. (THE CITY)
  4. "Greed at all costs." That's how Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg described the alleged "pervasive fraud and corruption" of more than a dozen New York City construction executives and companies in a series of indictments. According to Bragg, the company's schemes left workers dangerously uninsured, while rigging projects to exclude businesses owned by women and minorities. (New York City Patch)
  5. Here's a closer look at the state budget agreement lawmakers began voting on yesterday. It includes allows SUNY and CUNY universities to raise tuition, allows for the addition of 14 charter schools to New York City, makes it easier for state authorities to crack down on unlicensed cannabis shops, and much more.
