NYC Schools Chancellor David Banks To Retire By End Of Year: Report

His retirement will take effect on Dec. 31, 2024.

NEW YORK CITY — New York City Public Schools Chancellor David Banks will resign from his position before the end of the year and retire, according to multiple media reports.

Banks, in a resignation letter to Mayor Eric Adams, wrote he planned to retire by the end of the year.

His retirement will take effect on Dec. 31, according to an NBC News report.

“I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished during my tenure and the opportunity to work alongside such dedicated professionals to shape the future of education in our great city is one that I will always cherish,” Banks said in the resignation letter. “We have faced many challenges and made significant strides in improving the educational landscape for our students, families and educators.”

Banks had held top position for nearly three years. He is the latest city official to step down in recent weeks.

On Monday, health commissioner Ashwin Vasan announced his resignation.

Banks' home was among those raided by federal agents on Sept. 4. NYPD commissioner Edward Caban phone was seized in the raid, and he would later resign amid a corruption probe. Chief legal counsel Liza Zornberg also announced her resignation following the raids.
