Here are the top five stories today in New York City:
- Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg settled a lawsuit his office filed last week against Republicans in the House Judiciary Committee. The Committee, chaired by GOP Rep. Jim Jordan, had subpoenaed a former prosecutor from Bragg's office, who worked extensively on a case against Donald Trump before leaving abruptly; Bragg had filed the lawsuit to stop the prosecutor from testifying, but has since agreed to allow it. (AMNY)
- New York City public schools will soon be implementing climate-change-themed lessons, the city announced just in time for Earth Day. Next year every school will participate in a "Climate Action Day" to showcase environmental education and sustainability. (Gothamist)
- Two candidates are vying to become the next head of the NYPD's largest union, the Police Benevolent Association, after its longtime President Patrick Lynch announced his retirement. One of them would be the union's first Black leader, despite 57 percent of the NYPD being non-white. (Gothamist)
- Data shows mentally ill detainees at Rikers Island are more likely to harm themselves when compared to the larger jail population, as rates of self-harm at city jails has been increasing since 2019. Meanwhile, an advocate says the amount of available mental health units are "woefully short" of the overall need for them. (New York Daily News)
- New York Governor Kathy Hochul had an ambitious plan to address the state and city's housing crisis by promoting denser development in the suburbs surrounding NYC and the city proper. Titled the "Housing Compact," it would have aimed to produce 800,000 housing units over the next decade, but was met with opposition from both NYC and suburban lawmakers. (THE CITY)

- An unseasonably warm spring means tick season is here earlier than usual. New Yorkers heading to the great outdoors are encouraged to check for ticks frequently. In addition to Lyme disease, ticks can transmit a different virus in as little as 15 minutes. (Gothamist)
- Here's how New Yorkers celebrated Earth Day on Saturday: with an "Earth Rave" put on by "environmentally conscious DJs" at Union Square. (AMNY)
- New York Facebook users could be eligible to receive a payment as part of a settlement reached with the social network's parent company Meta. The lawsuit being settled alleges Facebook provided millions of user's personal data to the consulting firm Cambridge Analytica, which was tapped by Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.
