NYC Schools To Get Full Week Of Christmas Off
City schools will be closed on Monday, Dec. 23, Mayor Eric Adams announced Wednesday.
NEW YORK CITY — New York City students and staff will now have all of Christmas week off, thanks to a petition Brooklyn middle schooler.
City schools will be closed on Monday, Dec. 23, Mayor Eric Adams announced Wednesday.
“We know that a one-day week would not be well attended — so this just makes good sense. Our children’s education will not be short-changed," Adams said in a press release.

Isaac Regnier, a 7th grader, launched the petition hoping to get Dec. 23 off and push back the last day of school.
“This doesn’t make sense,” Regnier wrote in his petition. “Attendance will be very low that day. Kids whose families have travel plans will have to change their plans or be marked absent. Kids and teachers will feel annoyed.”

On Wednesday, Adams called Regnier while he was in class and thanked him for his advocacy.
"I read your letter and was really inspired," he said.
Public Schools Chancellor Aviles-Ramos said that the week off will give students "the chance to recharge their batteries before the new year."
