NYC Subway Delays: 7 Lines Roiled During Scorching Commute

Signal problems and a wayward tree branch rankled commutes as a heat wave continued.

NEW YORK, NY — Signal problems and a tree branch roiled Tuesday morning commutes on six subway lines as a heat wave continued to bake the city. Straphangers faced delays or service changes on the 2, 3, G, D, E, M and R lines, the MTA warned.

M train service was halted in both directions between Essex Street in Manhattan and Forest Hills-71st Avenue because of signal problems at Court Square-23rd Street, according to an MTA alert.

Those same issues caused delays on the R line and forced some southbound E trains to run local from Forest Hills-71st Avenue to Queens Plaza, the MTA said.

More signal problems at Greenpoint Avenue and 167th Street caused delays on the G and D lines respectively, according to alerts. D train service resumed just before 11 a.m.

A tree branch on the tracks at New Lots Avenue also delayed 2 and 3 trains Tuesday morning, though the MTA reported good service on those lines as of just before 11 a.m.

The problems likely left commuters sweating on a day with an expected sweltering high temperature near 93 degrees and a heat index as high as 103 degrees.

Straphangers also faced service changes on the J, M, B and 6 lines because of planned work, according to the MTA.
