NYC Triathlon Canceled As Heat Reaches Dangerous Levels
The event was scheduled for Sunday, July 21.
UPPER WEST SIDE, NY – Searing heat has forced the cancellation of this year's New York City Triathlon, organizers announced Thursday night. The decision was made as the city braces for the first 100 degree day in seven years Sunday.
The event's planners had been under pressure from the city to scrap this year's event, which would have seen entrants swim 1,500 meters in the Hudson, cycle 40 kilometers and run 10 kilometers on July 21. The course is mainly in Central Park.
"Through this week and into the approaching weekend, the New York City metro area has experienced multiple weather advisories, including severe heat warnings, continued heavy rainfall and thunderstorm watches," organizers said as they announced the cancellation.

"Race day temperature and humidity levels are projected to reach extreme levels. After exhausting all options to mitigate athlete, volunteer, spectator and staff exposure alike, we are unable to provide either a safe event experience or an alternate race weekend.
"As a result, in collaboration with the City of New York and all supporting agencies, Sunday’s triathlon has been cancelled."

Mayor Bill de Blasio had said Wednesday that the city was in talks with the hosts of the event, which is sponsored by Verizon, about canceling because of safety concerns.
Entrants were told they will get a full refund. More information is available at the NYC Triathlon's website.
