NYC Weather Forecast: 'Severe' Thunderstorm Warning, Flash Flood Warning In Effect

NEW YORK, NY — Rain, thunder and lightning began to come down hard on New York City just before 5 p.m. Monday, and weather officials warned the "severe" storm could last at least through nightfall.

A "flash flood warning" and "severe thunderstorm warning" issued by the National Weather Service were in effect for the entire NYC area until 8 p.m.

The storm was expected to dump up to 2 inches of rain to the city, with chances for even higher amounts locally. Weather officials also warned of "potentially damaging" wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour.

The rain began falling early Monday afternoon, then intensified around 4:30 p.m.

"Numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across the area from this afternoon into tonight ahead of a slow moving cold front," the weather service said. "Multiple rounds of thunderstorms have the potential to move across the same area, leading to flash flooding."
