NYC Weather Forecast: Strong Storm Could Hit City On Sandy Anniversary

The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather advisory for the region.

NEW YORK, NY — A storm is brewing in the Caribbean that is expected to make its way up the Atlantic coast and hit the New York City area on Sunday — the five-year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy.

This storm won't be nearly as powerful as the 2012 hurricane that left nearly 50 people dead in New York state alone. But forecasters say it could bring strong wind and rain, causing flash flooding, downed limbs and power outages.

"The potential exists for a strong cold front to approach from the west, while an intensifying storm moves up the coast, Sunday into Sunday night," the National Weather Service wrote in a hazardous weather outlook for the area. "This storm could produce heavy rain capable of causing areal and small stream flooding during this time frame, and also strong winds."

The storm currently sits just east of Central America and could form into a tropical storm or depression over the next couple of days. It is then forecasted to take a run up the East Coast of the United States, starting in Florida and heading all the way up through Massachusetts and Maine.

"In addition to the flood risk from leaves blocking storm drains, wind gusts from the south may be strong enough to break tree limbs and cause sporadic power outages," Accuweather writes. "The greatest risk of this may be from along the New Jersey coast and around New York City to the Hudson Valley and New England."
