NYC Weather: Hail, Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms Before 105-Degree Heat

The forecast this week keeps getting worse and worse.

NEW YORK CITY — New Yorkers dreading the expected triple-digit heat this week could first have another weather worry: strong summer thunderstorms.

Mid-afternoon storms Tuesday could bring hail, strong winds and up to 2 inches of heavy rain, according to a hazardous weather outlook the National Weather Service issued for the city.

The outlook also warns of heat even beyond a scorching forecast issued as the week dawned. High temperatures will reach into the 90s Thursday and could approach 100 degrees Friday as heat and humidity move into the region, forecasters warned.

"There is a chance that the heat index may reach 105 on both days," the outlook states.

An excessive heat watch or warning may be needed for Friday, according to a National Weather Service briefing.

Heat advisories could be issued Thursday, the briefing states.

But before the heat descends on New York City like a smothering summer blanket, city dwellers likely will have to contend with showers and thunderstorms.

Tuesday is likely to be mostly sunny, with a slight chance of showers before 3 p.m., the forecast states. After then, there's a chance of showers with heavy rain and thunderstorms.

"Chance of precipitation is 60%," the forecast states.
