NEW YORK CITY — Scattered rain showers and thunderstorms could hit the New York City area during the July 4th fireworks display and lingering throughout the holiday weekend, according to forecasters.

Wednesday is poised to be dry with temperatures near 80, forecasters said.

Showers and thunderstorms could affect Independence Day as early as 2 p.m., with a 30 percent chance of precipitation, forecasters said.

Thursday evening, rain and thunderstorms are more likely, with an 80 percent chance of precipitation.

The bad weather is expected to linger into Friday, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Temperatures will reach a high of 88 degrees, making it feel humid as well.

Saturday is expected to be rather cloudy and humid with heavy thunderstorms after 2 p.m., according to forecasters. Chance of precipitation is 60 %.

Showers will continue Saturday night, mainly before 8 p.m.

The area will finally get a dry spell on Sunday, when temperatures reach a high of 89 degrees.

Though it will only be temporary as Monday and Tuesday are expected to be wet one with rain and thunderstorms returning.
