NEW YORK — The fireworks aren't over. Strong thunderstorms, flash floods and powerful winds could hit the New York City area over the post-Fourth of July weekend, forecasters say.

Thunderstorms are likely to strike the city from Saturday afternoon into that evening, according to the National Weather Service. The storms expected to strike the tri-state area could bring damaging wind gusts and cause flash flooding, the weather service warns.

More than a quarter-inch of rain is forecast to fall on Central Park by early Sunday morning, the weather service says. Some showers could start as early as Friday afternoon, according to the forecast.

But a partly sunny Friday will give New Yorkers one last chance to get out of town for the weekend before the rain hits. High temperatures will hover in the mid- to upper 80s from Friday to Sunday, the weather service says.
