NYC Weather: Storms Loom Over Hot 4th of July

Thunderstorms could strike the city later this week as the mercury nears 90 degrees.

NEW YORK — Get ready for another kind of fireworks. A chance of thunderstorms will loom over a possibly hot Independence Day in New York City, forecasters say.

The National Weather Service predicts a 30 percent chance of storms on Thursday afternoon. It's uncertain how much rain might fall, but the best chance of nasty weather will come from noon to the 5 p.m. hour, the weather service says.

The potential storms will come as the mercury rises to a high near 89 degrees with humidity making it feel as hot as 93, according to the weather service.

The Fourth of July won't be the only hot or possibly wet day this week. A chance of thunderstorms will also loom on Tuesday and Friday, with high temperatures in the upper 80s expected for most of the work week, the forecast shows.

Monday will be clear and a little cooler, with sunshine and a high near 84, according to the weather service.

A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight. Partly cloudy, with a low around 73. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph.

Wednesday
Mostly sunny, with a high near 89. North wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the morning.
