NYC Weekend Subway Service Changes Jan. 19-21

Heads up: The 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, A, C, E, F, J, M, N, W and S​ trains won't be running normally this weekend.

NEW YORK, NY — Here's how the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will screw up your plans this weekend — from late Friday night, Jan. 18, through early Tuesday morning, Jan. 22 — in the name of "upgrading and maintaining our tracks, stations and signal systems in order to continue to provide our customers with safe and reliable service.

Getting around on the subway this weekend is going to be tough, as 16 train lines will be running with modified service. (For more New York City news delivered straight to your inbox sign up for Patch's free newsletters and breaking news alerts.)

1 train:

  • At all times until early 2020, 1 trains will skip 168 St in both directions due to elevator replacement work. For alternate service take the A at this station. Transfer between 1 and A trains at 59 St-Columbus Circle.

2 train:

  • From 11:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, to 4:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, free shuttle buses replace trains between Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College and Franklin Av due to track maintenance. 2 trains will run between Wakefield-241 and Franklin Av, and via the 4 to/from Crown Hts-Utica Av. Free shuttle buses will make all 2 line station stops between Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College and Franklin Av. Transfer between buses and 2/3/4 trains at Franklin Av or Nostrand Av.

2/3 trains:

  • From 10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, to 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, trains run local in both directions between 14 St and 72 St due to track replacement near Times Square-42 St. As a reminder, 3 service is suspended overnight.

3 train:

  • From 12:01 a.m. to 5 a.m., Saturday to Monday, Jan. 19, to Jan. 21, 3 service is suspended due to track replacement. 2 trains and free shuttle buses will replace 3 trains between Times Sq-42 St and Harlem-148 St during the overnight hours listed above. Use the 2 for service between Times Sq-42 St and 135 St. Use free shuttle buses to/from 148 St, via transfer with the 2 at 135 St.

4 train:

  • From 3:45 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, to 10 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, downtown trains skip 176 St, Mt Eden Av, 170 St, 167 St and 161 St-Yankee Stadium, due to track replacement near 167 St. As an alternative, use an uptown 4 to complete your trip. Transfer at 149 St-Grand Concourse or Burnside Av.
  • From 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, trains run every 16 minutes between 125 St and Woodlawn due to track replacement near 167 St. The last stop for some trains headed toward Woodlawn is 125 St. Transfer at 125 St to continue your trip.

4/5 trains:

  • From 10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, to 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, downtown trains run local from 125 St to Grand Central-42 St due to track replacement between 125 St and Grand Central-42 St. As a reminder, 5 service does not run in Manhattan overnight and will end early on Friday night.

5 train:

  • Beginning 8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, service ends early between E 180 St and Bowling Green due to track replacement. Take the 2 or 4.
  • From 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, and from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, trains run every 20 minutes between Eastchester-Dyre Av and Bowling Green due to track replacement.

4/6 trains:

  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, to 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, downtown trains skip 33 St, 28 St and 23 St due to electrical improvements between Grand Central and 23 St. As an alternative, use an uptown 4 local or 6 to complete your trip. Transfer at 14 St-Union Sq or Grand Central-42 St.

7 train:

  • From 12:15 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, to 4:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, free shuttle buses and E/F/N/W/S trains replace 7 service between 34 St-Hudson Yards and Queensboro Plaza due to essential track maintenance.
    • This weekend, 7 trains will operate between Flushing-Main St and Queensboro Plaza.

A/C trains:

  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18 to 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, uptown A trains run local from W 4 St to 59 St-Columbus Circle due to track replacement. Manhattan-bound trains are rerouted via the F from Jay St-MetroTech to W 4 St. As a reminder, C trains do not run overnight.
    • For High St, use the nearby York St F station.
    • For Fulton St, take the E via transfer at W 4 St for service to nearby World Trade Center.
    • For Chambers St, Canal St, and Spring St, transfer to a downtown A local or C/E/F at W 4 St.

E train:

  • From 10:45 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, to 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, free shuttle buses replace trains between Briarwood and Jamaica Center Parsons/Archer due to track maintenance. E trains run between World Trade Center and Briarwood, and via the F to/from Jamaica-179 St. Free shuttle buses will make all E line station stops between Kew Gardens-Union Tpke and Jamaica Center Parsons/Archer. Transfer between buses and trains at Kew Gardens-Union Tpke or Briarwood. For service between Manhattan and JFK Airport, take the A to/from Howard Beach-JFK Airport.
  • From 11 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, to 7 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, and from 11 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 to 8 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, Manhattan-bound trains stop at 67 Av, 63 Dr-Rego Park, Woodhaven Blvd, Grand Av-Newtown, and Elmhurst Av due to electrical improvements.

F train:

  • From 11:45 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18 to 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, Brooklyn-bound trains are rerouted via the E line after 36 St to 47-50 Sts Rockefeller Ctr due to track maintenance. As an alternative, use a Queens-bound F train to complete your trip via transfer at 47-50 Sts Rockefeller Ctr or Roosevelt Av. For Lexington Av/63 St, take the Q or transfer to a Queens-bound F train at 47-50 Sts Rockefeller Ctr.
  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, to 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, downtown trains skip 23 St and 14 St due to track maintenance. As an alternative, use an uptown F train to complete your trip. Transfer at W 4 St or 34 St-Herald Sq.
  • From 6:45 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, and Sunday, Jan. 20, Queens-bound trains run express from Avenue X to 18 Av due to signal improvements. As an alternative, use a Coney Island-bound F train to complete your trip. Transfer at 18 Av, Kings Hwy, or Avenue X.
  • From 11 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, to 7 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, and from 11 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 to 8 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, Brooklyn-bound trains will stop at 67 Av, 63 Dr-Rego Park, Woodhaven Blvd, Grand Av-Newtown, and Elmhurst Av due to electrical improvements.

J train:

  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, to 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, free shuttle buses and/or 4/6/F trains replace J trains between Myrtle Av and Broad St due to structural improvements. J trains will run between Jamaica Ctr Parsons/Archer and Myrtle Av. Free shuttle buses will run between Myrtle Av and Delancey-Essex Sts. Transfer between trains and buses at Myrtle Av and/or Delancey-Essex Sts F. For service between Delancey-Essex Sts and Broad St, use 6 to/from nearby stations via transfer at Bleeker St/B’way-Lafayette St. Transfer to/from the 4 at Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall. For service to/from Manhattan, use the A/C or L via transfer at Broadway Junction.
  • At all times until summer 2019, trains skip 111 St in both directions due station rehabilitation work. As an alternative, use nearby stations at 104 St or 121 St to complete your trip. Take the Q56 bus to/from 104 St and 121 St J/Z stations; free transfer with MetroCard. Additional free transfers with MetroCard will be available between Q37, Q56 and the subway at 104 St, 121 St, or Woodhaven Blvd stations. M train:

  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, to 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, free shuttle buses replace M trains due to structural improvements. M service is suspended. Free shuttle buses will run along two routes: between Delancey-Essex St and Middle Village-Metropolitan Av, and between Delancey-Essex St and Myrtle Av, where J trains are available to Jamaica Center Parsons/Archer.

N train:

  • At all times until Spring 2019, Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound trains skip Fort Hamilton Pkwy, New Utrecht Av, 18 Av, and 20 Av, due to station rehabilitation work on theSea Beach Line. For service to these stations, use a Manhattan-bound N train to complete your trip. Transfer at Bay Pkwy or 8 Av. For New Utrecht Av-62 St, take the D instead. Transfer between N and D trains at 36 St.
  • At all times until July 2019, trains will run local in both directions between 59 St and 36 St in Brooklyn due to structural rehabilitation work to repair and replace steel columns, lighting, ventilators, and deteriorated concrete, and perform water mitigation work to address water seepage in the express tunnel between the 59 St and 36 St stations. N trains will stop at 53 St and 45 St in both directions.
  • At all times until February 2019, trains will skip Broadway and 39 Av in both directions due to MTA’s Enhanced Station Initiative project. For alternate service, use the nearby open Astoria line stations at 30 Av, 36 Av, or Queensboro Plaza via the Q102 bus. For a graphical guide to these alternate travel directions, click here.

W train:

  • From 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, special weekend service will run between Whitehall St-South Ferry and Astoria-Ditmars Blvd to provide additional service due to track replacement on the Flushing 7 Line.

S train:

  • From 12:01 a.m. to 6 a.m. Saturday to Monday, Jan. 19 to Jan. 21, the 42 St shuttle will operate overnight to provide alternate service due to track replacement on the Flushing 7 Line.
