Here are the top five stories today in New York City:

  1. A massive fire that officials expected could burn on for several days broke out yesterday morning at a Brooklyn NYPD auto pound, injuring eight people. The Red Hook facility is used for storing cars that have been seized for reasons other than parking violations. (New York City Patch)
  2. The workers at the Meatpacking District Starbucks Roastery location have ended a nearly 50-day strike that began after reports of mold and bedbugs. 3. One year after its opening, East Harlem residents have conflicting views on New York City's (and the nation's) first safe injection site, with some attributing it to increasing crime rates and in the neighborhood, while the city maintains it has been successful in preventing New Yorkers suffering serious consequences to drug overdoses. (THE CITY)
  4. New York City will add an additional 800 special education seats to its pre-K and 3-K programs, Mayor Eric Adams announced yesterday. The seats are the result of a $130 million special early education allocation over the next two years that will help 'stabilize' 3,000 seats for pre-K and 3-K students with disabilities. (AMNY)
  5. Fifty-eight percent of New York voters think that Gov. Kathy Hochul has not made the state safer from crime, a new poll from Sienna College found, with 51 percent of respondents saying she did not enhance trust in government. The first major poll since Hochul won a full term in office found she had a 45 percent of people viewed her favorably compared to 43 unfavorably. (Gothamist)
