Nearly 20 Weed Trucks Seized From NYC Streets In NYPD Bust
"Up in smoke," an NYPD bigwig tweeted after cops Tuesday seized 19 cannabis trucks that he said didn't have permits.

NEW YORK CITY — New York City's growing fleet of weed trucks took another major hit Tuesday after NYPD officers seized nearly 20 of them off the streets, officials said.
"Up in smoke," tweeted NYPD Chief of Patrol Jeffrey Maddrey, along with a video showing the seized cannabis buses.
"While others follow the rules, these trucks and their vendors don’t have permits so we took action!"

Recreational marijuana may be legal — on paper — in New York, but so far the state has yet to issue licenses for its sale.
This has created a hazy legal area in which weed is legal but the recent explosion of storefronts, bodegas and trucks selling or "gifting" marijuana are doing it illegally until state licenses go out, likely in the fall.

State officials recently slapped 17 city storefronts and trucks with cease and desist letters on accusations the businesses are selling cannabis without a license.
The cannabis truck busts by the NYPD on Tuesday dovetail with those letters.
Maddrey tweeted that the NYPD is responding to 311 complaints from New Yorkers and business district officials. His tweet tied it to a larger — and controversial — police crackdown on quality of life offenses.
In all, NYPD officers seized 19 cannabis trucks and buses off the streets, Maddrey tweeted.
"If you are looking to buy illegal Cannabis from the Weed World Bus located on 5th Avenue & 40th street it is no longer open for business," he tweeted, along with a photo. "We do not anticipate it opening for business anytime soon!"
