Overall Crime Down In July Despite Uptick in Murder, Hate Crimes: Data

NEW YORK CITY — Overall crime in New York City decreased for the seventh straight month in July, but the city saw a slight uptick in murder, rape and hate crime incidents, according to data released by the NYPD.

Overall crime in July 2024 dipped 4.2 percent from 11,505 in July 2023 to 11,022, according to NYPD data.

Murder numbers in July increased slightly from 38 to 44, but year-to-date figures shows a 10.2 percent reduction in homicides, from 246 last year to 221.

In addition, shootings trended downward, with a 9.5 percent decrease in shootings in July from 113 to 91. Year-to-date numbers saw a decrease of 10.9 percent from 595 to 530.

An increase in hate crime incidents continue to be an issue for police. The Hate Crime Task Force reported four more incidents in July 2024 with 52 compared to last year with 48 incidents.

Also, more than half of the hate crimes reported were antisemitic.

Rape incidents in the city jumped 6.3 percent with 135 incidents compared to 127 last year, according to NYPD data.

The transit systems also saw a 7.7 percent decrease in crime year-to-date from 1,304 incidents to 1,203.

The NYPD reported that the subway system saw major crime levels dropped to their lowest in 15 years, excluding pandemic-related anomalies.

In the city, burglary saw the biggest decrease with 142 fewer reported crimes in July 2024 from 1,181 to 1,039.

The NYPD’s enforcement activities increased, with major index crime arrests up 11.3 percent in July from 4,633 to 5,158 and a 10.4 percent year-to-date increase, reflecting the highest number of felony arrests since 1998.

“These remarkable, ongoing decreases in crime and violence, month after month, are the dividends earned from tireless efforts coupled with strategic planning and deployment,” said Police Commissioner Edward A. Caban. “NYPD officers dutifully patrol the many neighborhoods of our great city every day, disrupting and preventing criminal activity. They do this because they have the support of the people we serve—New Yorkers who actively embrace the concept of public safety as a shared responsibility. I know that our collective successes will carry us through the remaining summer months and further steel our resolve to always keep every community safe.”
