Feds Reveal Penn Station Renovation Timeline: See When It Will Start
Officials have promised a "complete top-to-bottom modernization and transformation" of Penn Station, that will save taxpayer dollars.
NEW YORK CITY — The long-awaited renovation plans for Penn Station in New York City is expected to start by 2027, federal officials announced on Wednesday.
"Enough talking, we can’t wait any longer,” Andy Byford, an Amtrak executive chosen by the Trump administration to oversee the project, said at a news conference.
Byford along with Sean Duffy, U.S. transportation secretary, promised a "complete top-to-bottom modernization and transformation" of Penn Station, that will save taxpayer dollars.

Amtrak, backed by USDOT, will now spearhead the remainder of the renovation project. Federal officials said that the move would save taxpayers $120 million by putting Amtrak in charge.

“This is a very aggressive timeframe," Byford told reporters.
The next step in the process would to begin soliciting a developer for the project in October, according to officials. A developer will be chosen by May 2026.
In addition, the transportation department has issued a grant of $43 million to Amtrak toward preliminary engineering work on the project.
