The updated "A City of Neighborhoods" map gives a better look at the hills, valleys and ridges that inspired names across the boroughs. (New York City Department of Planning)

Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

  1. New York City just released a new map defining the five boroughs' ups and downs (literally) and breaking the city into neighborhoods. But it probably won't settle age-old debates over where neighborhood boundaries begin and end because it comes with the disclaimer that "Neighborhood names are not officially designated." (New York City Patch)
  2. NYC's roughly 60,000 food delivery workers could soon get a raise of up to $23.82 per hour by 2025, according to a proposal released by city consumer and worker protection officials. Delivery workers currently make $7.09 per hour on hour, excluding tips, officials said. (New York City Patch)
  3. Tenants are urging New York State to close a loophole often called "frankensteining" which allows landlords to combine two adjacent vacant housing units that are rent stabilized and charge as much as they want for it, potentially removing the units from the program. They say this practice has been on the rise since the state passed sweeping rent law reforms in 2019. (The City)
  4. New York State's concealed carry gun laws have been reinstated for the second time as they make their way through an appeals court. The laws, which ban gun owners from carrying firearms in some public spaces, were blocked in part by a judge last week, including new background check requirements for gun permits. (New York Daily News)
  5. Hundreds of New Yorkers participated in an otherwise routine Department of Buildings meeting to draw attention to what they see as a major loophole in one of the city's most important climate laws, which requires buildings to significantly reduce their carbon emissions by 2024 and 2030. The law has a potential loophole that could allow wealthy owners to pay their way out of reductions. Buildings currently account for 70 percent of the metro area's greenhouse gas emissions.
