Shop In NYC On Small Business Saturday

Keep it local this weekend.

NEW YORK, NY — Sandwiched between the commercial craze of Black Friday and Cyber Monday is Small Business Saturday, an effort to boost holiday spending at local businesses. Thousands of New York City shops will be among the many across the nation participating in the initiative, which American Express started in 2010.

Some 112 million people nationwide took to their local stores on the Saturday after Thanksgiving last year, generating $15.4 billion for participating shops, according to American Express.

Small businesses make up a huge part of New York City's economy — about 88 percent of the city's businesses have 20 or fewer employees, according to a 2013 report from the city Economic Development Corporation.
