Subway Shover Charged With Attempted Murder, Victim Critically Injured

NEW YORK CITY — A 23-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after he pushed a subway rider onto the subway tracks in Manhattan on Tuesday, police said.

Kamel Hawkins, 23, was also charged with second-degree assault after he shoved the victim onto the tracks at the 18th Street station, police said.

Surveillance videos captured the incident, and the suspect could be seen pushing the victim as he appeared to look at his phone as a train pulled into the station.

The victim, a 45-year-old man, was struck by an incoming 1 train and survived the ordeal with only a head injury, police said.

The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical but stable condition. The victim's current condition is unknown as of Thursday afternoon.
