Here are the top five stories in New York City today:
- Mayor Eric Adams wants the President to investigate how social media is influencing young people, in response to a question at a press conference about a 15-year-old boy who died while subway surfing Monday evening. “I am hoping the president calls a national Blue Ribbon Commission to really analyze this thing that has really dropped into our lives," he said. (New York City Patch)
- The family of civil rights leader Malcolm X plan to sue New York City for $100 million, claiming that city authorities conspired to murder him and then used a botched investigation to cover it up. The announcement comes on the 58th anniversary of his assassination. In 2021, two men were exonerated after being convicted for the murder in 1966. (Gothamist)
- The city has been auctioning off for just $500,000 more than $200 million worth of COVID-19 personal protective equipment (PPE) and other pandemic-era purchases bought with taxpayer dollars, an investigation by THE CITY found. In many cases the items up for grabs were unused and in their original packaging. (THE CITY)
- The MTA is rolling out a pilot program for new "wide aisle" subway entrances this spring in two stations in Queens and Brooklyn, which will provide easier access for New Yorkers using wheelchairs. Transit officials have also suggested that a system-wide turnstile redesign could help combat fare evasion. (AMNY)
- New York state lawmakers from outside the city are upset with Gov. Kathy Hochul's proposal to raise $800 million annually for the city's subway system, saying that their constituents aren't frequently straphangers. The money would be collected through a hike on the payroll mobility tax. Some subway riders themselves say they don't want to pay the tax either. (Spectrum NY 1)
