Thanksgiving 2017: What's Open, Closed In NYC

Here's how to get what you need before Turkey Day.

NEW YORK, NY — The days around Thanksgiving can be a busy time, full of mad dashes to the supermarket the day before and early-morning Black Friday shopping scrambles the day after. But most stores and offices close on Thanksgiving Day to give everyone a chance to celebrate.

While just about every public building will be closed Thursday in observance of the holiday, some stores and supermarkets will have limited hours for any last-minute shopping needs.

And to make your life a little easier if you've got a car, alternate-side parking rules are suspended Thursday.

Here's a full look at what's open and closed on Thanksgiving Day in New York City.

Schools, Public Buildings

All New York City public schools are closed on Thanksgiving Day. So are all city, state and federal government buildings.

Thanksgiving is a postal holday, so post offices are closed and mail won't be delivered on Thursday.

Trash & Recycling

The Department of Sanitation won't be collecting garbage, recycling or organics on Thanksgiving Day. If your trash and organics are normally picked up on Thursdays, you can put them out after 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving for pickup on Friday. But you'll have to wait to put out recycling until Wednesday, Nov. 29.

There's also no street cleaning on Thanksgiving, so don't worry about alternate-side parking rules.

Subways & Buses

The MTA subway and bus systems will run on a Sunday schedule on Thanksgiving Day, meaning service is more limited than usual.

Entrances to the 57th Street station on the F line will be closed from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. The MTA also plans to close or restrict some entrances at the 34th Street-Herald Square, Penn Station, 59th Street-Columbus Circle and 72nd Street stations to "reduce overcrowding" on stairways.
