Thanksgiving 2021: What's Open, Closed In NYC
Even on a major holiday, a lot of NYC stores and services are open.

NEW YORK CITY — If you need a last-minute trip to buy stuffing or are heading to a Thanksgiving feast in another neighborhood, don't fear: New York City never sleeps, even on a holiday.
But, though many businesses and services will remain open on Thursday, others will mark the holiday by closing or changing what they offer.
Here's a full look at what's open and closed on Thanksgiving Day in New York City.

Subways & Buses
Generally, the subway and MTA buses will operate on a Sunday schedule for the holiday, with a Saturday schedule for the Staten Island Railway.
Exceptions will be in place for services involving the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. For that, the MTA will offer:

- Additional service on the 42 Street Shuttle and increased early morning service on the 1 Line
- 17 extra Long Island Rail Road trains. Six extra westbound trains will leave Long Island from 6 a.m. to 7:45 a.m., and 11 extra eastbound trains will leave Penn Station between 11 a.m. and 1:35 p.m.
- Metro-North will offer additional inbound morning service, and expanded outbound service from the late morning until the mid-afternoon.
Trash & Recycling
The Department of Sanitation will not collect garbage, recycling or organics on Thanksgiving Day. If your trash and organics are normally picked up on Thursdays, you can put them out after 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving for pickup on Friday.
There's also no street cleaning on Thanksgiving and alternate-side parking rules are suspended.
Public Buildings
All city, state and federal government buildings are closed Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving is a postal holiday, post offices are closed and mail won't be delivered on Thursday.
Supermarkets & Department Stores
Several supermarkets are open part of Thanksgiving Day for your last-minute shopping needs. And some departments open on Thursday evening to get a head start on Black Friday shopping.
Here's a list of some major stores and their Thanksgiving hours.
Groceries:
- Fairway Market: Stores will be open but with earlier closing than normal.
- Fresh Direct: Open regular hours but delivery orders must be placed in advance. See the reservation schedule here.
- Key Food: Stores will be open but may have reduced hours — call your local store to check.
- Trader Joe's: All stores closed on Thanksgiving.
- Whole Foods: Most Whole Foods will be open on Thanksgiving but will close at 3 p.m. The Bryant Park store will be closed.
Pharmacies:
- Duane Reade: Stores open on Thanksgiving Day.
- Walgreens: Stores open on Thanksgiving Day.
- CVS: Most stores open on Thanksgiving Day, but some with reduced hours.
- Rite Aid: Some stores open Thanksgiving Day.
