These Are NYC's Poopiest Neighborhoods

A real estate website mapped out the areas that complain most about poop. See how your neighborhood stacks up.

NEW YORK — Garbage isn't the only nasty smell that invades New Yorkers' noses. Whether it's found in a park, on the sidewalk or even in the subway, poop isn't an uncommon sight in the five boroughs, according to a new study.

The real estate website RealtyHop looked at 311 complaint data to get an idea of just how frequently crap crops up in New York, Chicago and San Francisco, and which neighborhoods were trouble spots.

While the local "poop crisis" has abated since 2011, the Big Apple still racked up 2,458 complaints about sightings of human and animal waste in 2017, more than twice Chicago's 955 but less than an eighth of San Francisco's 20,890, the study found.

Staten Island was the cleanest borough last year with just 2.4 poop complaints per square mile, RealtyHop says.

The Bronx was also home to the city's most poop-filled neighborhood: Soundview-Bruckner sees an average of 46 yearly complaints per 10,000 households, RealtyHop found.

RealtyHop found a negative correlation at the ZIP code level between poop complaints and median home values. That means New Yorkers in more expensive areas are less likely to spot scat, and vice versa.
