
NEW YORK, NY — Olivia and Liam were the most popular names for the newest New Yorkers in 2016, the city Department of Health announced Wednesday. Most of the city's top 10 baby names from 2015 retained their spots last year, in which a total of 120,367 babies were born in the five borouoghs, officials said.
Olivia also took the top spot for girls in 2015, while Liam moved to No. 1 last year from No. 2 in 2015. Ethan, 2015's most popular name for boys, was No. 3 last year.
In all, nine of the most popular girls' names and eight of the most popular boys' names from 2015 stayed in last year's top 10 list.

Rounding out the top five for girls were Sophia, Emma, Isabella and Mia. The top five names for boys also included Jacob, Ethan, Noah and Aiden.
Brooklyn saw the most new babies last year — health officials counted 40,125 live births in the borough, followed by Queens with 26,794, the Bronx with 19,474, Manhattan with 17,199 and Staten Island with 5,357.

New baby boys outnumbered baby girls across the city last year, 61,632 to 58,735.
Many new parents named their kids after famous figures, both real and fictional. Emma (No. 3), Scarlett (No. 33) and Bella (No. 51) were among the top girls' names taken from celebrites and characters from books, movies and TV shows. Parents of boys turned to Logan (No. 29), Leo (No. 41) and Luke (No. 55).
On the other end of the spectrum, as few as 10 new parents gave their kids unique names such as Ariadne, Dulce and Zofia for girls and Amar, Ibraheem and Ori for boys.
