Travel Advisory Issued As Snow Bears Down On NYC

NEW YORK, NY – A travel advisory has been issued for Thursday night and Friday morning as a winter storm bears down on New York City.

Forecasters are expecting just light snow through the night, turning to rain by Friday morning and leaving no more than an inch on the ground. But, after a similar prediction in November proved dramatically wrong, the city is aiming to be prepared.

The November 15 storm was expected to be just an inch or two, but ended with 6 inches of messy, slushy snow that snarled roads and left city commutes in chaos. Many people spent hours on the roads trying to get home.

“We are expecting a wintry mix of snow and rain that can cause slippery road conditions during the Thursday evening and Friday commutes,” said NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Joseph Esposito.

“We advise you to take caution, allow for extra travel time, and wherever possible, consider taking mass transit.”

The Department of Sanitation has readied 695 salt spreaders and 1,000 plows that will be ready to hit the roads if more than 2 inches of snow falls, the city said.

There are no plans to close schools of alter scheduled after-school activities.
