NEW YORK CITY — An incredible time-lapse captured the exact moment that New Yorkers found their city had transformed into Mars.

Wildfire smoke turned the city's skies a surreal orange in the matter of minutes Wednesday, as vividly depicted in a video shared by the National Weather Service.

"Check out this almost unbelievable time-lapse of wildfire smoke consuming the World Trade Center and the New York City skyline," the service's New York office tweeted.

The surreal sight likely won't return Thursday as the city's air quality is expected to slightly improve, but will remain poor, the National Weather Service warned.

The city's air quality Thursday morning remained the worst in the world, according to IQAir. Its air quality index stood at 182 in the "unhealthy" range, far above the 50 level considered the top of "good," the monitoring service reported.
