The government holiday stems from President Benjamin Harrison, who organized the first Columbus Day celebration in 1892 to mark the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus landing in the Americas.

A little more than 40 years later, in 1934, President FranklinRoosevelt made Columbus Day a national holiday.

But the holiday has increasingly been controversial, as many Americans felt honoring a man who enslaved and killed indigenous people shouldn't be honored. Many states and cities have recently chosen to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples' Day.

Doing so has been contentious in New York City, where people of Italian descent view the holiday as a way to honor their heritage.

The city thus has a variety of holiday celebrations, including the annual Columbus Day Parade and schools taking the day off as Italian Heritage/Indigenous Peoples' Day.
