What's Open, Closed On Veterans Day In NYC

Veterans Day falls on a Sunday, but some will observe the holiday on Monday.

NEW YORK, NY — The big parade may be on Sunday, but some New Yorkers will mark Veterans Day a day late. City government offices, courts and schools will all be closed on Monday, Nov. 12 in observance of the holday.

Drivers and straphangers alike get a break, too — alternate-side parking rules are suspended on Monday, but the subway will run on a regular weekday schedule. Here's a look at how Veterans Day is impacting the city so you can plan ahead for the weekend.

Sunday, Nov. 11

  • New York City government offices and courts will be closed, as they normally are on Sundays.
  • City public schools will be closed for the weekend.
  • There will be no mail delivery, just like any other Sunday.
  • See planned subway service changes here.
  • Look out for street closures in Manhattan from the 2018 Veterans Day Parade, which runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Monday, Nov. 12

  • City government offices, libraries and state and federal courts will be closed.
  • Post offices will be closed. There will be no mail delivery.
  • Alternate side parking rules are suspended.
  • There will be no garbage, recycling or organics collection. Street cleaning will not occur.
    • If Monday is your normal garbage or organics pickup day, put your materials out after 4 p.m. on Monday
    • If Monday is your normal recycling pickup day, put your materials out after 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18 for pickup on Monday, Nov. 19.
  • New York City subways will run on a regular weekday schedule.
