Woman Arrested For Abandoning Newborn Baby At NYC's Penn Station: NYPD

Police used surveillance footage to track the suspect down.

NEW YORK CITY — A woman has been arrested after she allegedly abandoned her newborn daughter near a subway platform in Penn Station on Monday, police said Wednesday.

Assa Diawara, 30, is accused of leaving the baby girl near the staircase leading to the southbound 1, 2 and 3 train platform around 9:30 a.m., police said.

The baby girl was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

Diawara has been charged with abandonment of a child and child endangerment.

The 30-year-old woman was taken into custody late Tuesday. Police released surveillance images of Diawara earlier in the day.

According to police, they tracked her down to a home in Jamaica, Queens.

She is expected to be arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court on Wednesday.
