Rockland County Legislator Aney Paul visited the Hubert Humphrey Senior Center in Chestnut Ridge on Wednesday, September 5th to speak about the county’s Mosquito Control Program developed by the Rockland County Health Department (RCHD) to reduce mosquito breeding sites and the threat of West Nile Virus. Brian Hunderfund, the county’s Director of Mosquito Control, accompanied her.
Paul and Hunderfund provided tips on how to reduce the mosquito population and how to avoid contact with mosquitoes. Tips included removal of outdoor containers that retain standing water and the removal of leaf and yard debris, which are prime areas where mosquitoes will breed. Outdoor activity should be minimized when mosquitoes are most active and personal protection, such as long sleeves and pants and use of repellents, is recommended.

Paul, a registered nurse, spoke about symptoms of West Nile Virus that can range from mild (slight fever, head and body aches) to severe (high fever, muscle weakness, disorientation).
“Given the rise of infected mosquitoes in the county, it is important to keep talking about the precautionary measures that residents can take to reduce the mosquito population,” said Paul. “Our seniors are always receptive to health and safety programs and will employ preventive measures to guard against the risks involved. They can be relied upon to pass the information onto their loved ones, so the word is spread further.”
