Clarkstown Reminds Residents Of Smoke Before Fireworks Event Thursday

The air is unhealthy for children, the elderly and people with heart or lung troubles, so town officials will offer masks at the entrance.

NEW CITY, NY — Reminding residents about the air pollution from smoke of Canadian wildfires, Clarkstown officials sent a note about the town's Fourth of July fireworks event Thursday night.

"N-95 Masks will be available for those sensitive groups at the entrance to the fields," they said.

At 2:40 p.m., the Air Quality Index was 105 and had moved into the orange zone. It had climbed to 140 by 4:33 p.m.

AirNow.gov's website shows AQI for specific locations as well as an interactive map. (

When air pollution is high enough that it is unhealthy for people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teens, health officials recommend:

  • Choose less strenuous activities.
  • Shorten the amount of time you are active outdoors.
  • Be active outdoors when air quality is better.

As of 2:44 p.m., the smoke was affecting most of the Eastern United States.
