Couple Who Murdered Grandpa Get Long Prison Sentences
They and their children lived with him, before the couple hid his body in a crawl space and stole his stuff, according to prosecutors.
NEW CITY, NY — A couple who violently murdered their 85-year-old family patriarch, and then lived with the body while they looted his property, will spend decades behind bars.
Rockland County District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh II announced on Tuesday the sentencing of 32-year-old Constantinos Doonan, a/k/a "Dino," of New City, on a charge of felony second degree murder, and 28-year-old Jo-Ann Haughey of New City, on a charge of felony first degree manslaughter, in the killing of Constantinos Mastakouris, who is Doonan's grandfather.
Between January 29 –30, 2023, acting individually and in concert with each other, prosecutors say Doonan and Haughey brutally caused the death of Constantinos Mastakouris in a Ruth Drive home in New City.

Mastakouris was the owner of the house, and lived there with several family members, including Doonan and Haughey, and their two young children.
Mastakouris was strangled and choked to death, after which Doonan and Haughey wrapped his body in a tablecloth, kiddie pool, and shower curtain and then placed his body in a crawl space in the basement of the home, near where they slept with their children, according to prosecutors.

Between Jan. 29 and March 19, Doonan and Haughey stole and possessed property belonging to Mastakouris, including but not limited to his car, jewelry and credit card.
"Today, the defendants in this case were held responsible for their heinous crimes that resulted in the senseless murder of an 85-year old man, who was the grandfather of one of the defendants," District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh II said. "The killing of one's grandfather is evil and an unimaginable act. The actions of the defendants have left their family completely shattered by this horrific act. The defendants are being held fully accountable for their crimes and will serve lengthy prison terms. I commend the investigation by the Clarkstown Police Department and prosecution by Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Dominic Crispino and Supervising Assistant District Attorney Sharleen Bailon."
Doonan was sentenced to 20 years to life in state prison on the second-degree murder conviction. Haughey was sentenced to 15 years in prison on the manslaughter in the first degree conviction.
