Downtown New City Project Reaches Courthouse Steps

Southbound traffic detoured to Maple Avenue.

Construction crews on the downtown New City renovation project have started work to put new sidewalks, landscaping and street lighting in front of one of the community's most notable landmarks, the Rockland County Courthouse.

Excavators and dump trucks have taken up positions on Main Street near the intersection with Congers Road for the work, which has closed the southbound lane of Main Street for about a block. Southbound traffic is detoured to Maple Avenue. Businesses on the block are open and court workers are still able to access employee parking through the Main Street driveway of the courthouse.

As workers are ripping up the street in front of the courthouse at 1 S. Main St., other workers across the street are completing detail elements of new sidewalks already built on that side of Main Street. The ongoing work is part of a renovation effort that is running from Congers Road to Third Street – with the next phase of the project tackling Main Street south of Third Street.

Also across the street from the courthouse, a new gazebo that is to be part of the renovated Landau Memorial Park is taking shape.

The current work is expected to be completed by late November.
