DWI Checkpoint Leads to 7 Arrests Over Holiday Weekend

Police: Man charged with violating Leandra's Law for driving drunk while two children were in his car.

The Rockland County Sheriff's Department and Spring Valley Police Department teamed up over the Labor Day weekend for an anti-drunken driving checkpoint on Route 59, where officials say six people were arrested for DWI and a seventh person was charged with driving while on drugs.

One man was charged with violations of Leandra's Law, which makes it a felony to drive drunk with a child in the car. In this case, police said there were two children in the car at the time it was stopped at the checkpoint.

Funding for the Saturday checkpoint came through the New City-based Rockland County STOP DWI Program. The checkpoint used the county's STOP DWI Command Van, according to Sheriff's Police Division Captain William Barbera.
