
The CEJJES Institute and Rockland Community College will hold their 6th Annual Supplementary Education Summit on Saturday, October 13. Workshops and discussion groups bring together parents, students in grades 7-12, educators, and community members. The event begins at 8:30 am with registration and continental breakfast in the Technology Center. It is free and open to the public
This year’s summit theme is Assessment, Teaching, and Learning, Beyond the Test Bubble. Parents and educators are encouraged to attend and gain a better understanding of how to use testing to improve teaching and learning. Students will have several workshops to choose from during the day, all designed to help them succeed through their high school and college education.
One session that is designed for both students and adults is, Bullying: A National Challenge and presented by Pam Charles, principal BOCES alternative HS. The annual summit promotes the importance of education and academic achievement and the importance of family and community involvement in the academic and personal development of children.

The keynote speaker is Pedro Noguera, executive director of the Metropolitan Center for Urban Education at New York University. His topic is, Educational Equity: Taking Back What is Rightfully Ours. Dr. Noguera is an urban sociologist whose scholarship and research focus on the ways schools are influenced by social and economic conditions in the urban environment.
He holds faculty appointments in two departments at NYU - at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Development, and the Department of Sociology. Dr. Noguera also serves on the SUNY Board of Trustees since his appointment by the Governor in 2008.

This collaborative educational event includes the East Ramapo Central School District, East Ramapo PTA Council, NAACP-Spring Valley Chapter, Nyack School District, Susan G. and Edmund W. Gordon Community Partnership, Rockland BOCES, Rockland County Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and RCC Student Ambassadors. The summit also receives support from the Town of Ramapo, the Spring Valley NAACP, and corporate sponsorship from Colgate-Palmolive.
