Joan Bender who was one of the owners of Brookside Nursery was also known as known as the shed lady, the flower woman, and the lollipop lady.  With the support of the Bender family, Kristine Effaldana (known as Kristine Dana) devised Haunt for Hospice in her memory.

According to the Haunt For Hospice website, “Haunt For Hospice is a fundraiser to help United Hospice of Rockland to continue to provide care, hope, comfort and improved quality of life to individuals and their families facing serious illness.  United Hospice of Rockland has touched our hearts in providing such services to loved ones close to us.  The newly opened Joe Raso Hospice Residence provides so many families with the comfort of staying together during their last weeks together.  With so little options for these families, the new Hospice Home provides a residential environment, together with the full complement of Hospice’s comfort-oriented care and services including expert pain and symptom management, nursing care, assistance with tasks of daily living (feeding, bathing, etc.), friendly visiting volunteers, spiritual and psycho-social counseling for patients and their loved ones, and bereavement counseling and support groups for surviving family members.”

Funds will be raised through the generosity of corporate sponsorships, decorated donation cans placed in Rockland businesses, individual donations, the support of the many families that Hospice has already touched, and the generosity of those who visit Haunt for Hospice.  For more information, contact Kristine Dana at 845-893-9166 and United Hospice of Rockland at 845 634-4974, visit http://hauntforhospice.com <http://hauntforhospice.com> and/or www.hospiceofrockland.org <http://www.hospiceofrockland.org> .
