Farmhouse Estate 'Carved' From Sugar Loaf Mountain: HV Wow House
The Orange County Land Trust acquired most of the iconic property, once painted by famous artist Jasper Cropsey of the Hudson River School.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — A bucolic 10-acre farmhouse estate at the foot of Sugar Loaf Mountain, surrounded by preserved land and a forest, is now on the market for $1.25 million with Ellis Sotheby’s International Realty.
Located at 282 Laroe Road in Chester, New York, the parcel known as Woodside consists of three structures: a 6,600-square-foot, six-bedroom, four-bath colonial farmhouse; an 8,000-square-foot, red barn with five-bay garage; and a post-and-steel building previously used as a hunting lodge.
The 10-acre property has been carved out of a 320-acre purchase by the Orange County Land Trust to facilitate the protection of Sugar Loaf Mountain and its surrounding undeveloped acreage.

Land trust officials began meeting in 2019 with the Palmer family, who owned the farm and the mountain, to discuss their plans and goals for their beloved property.
Jim Delaune, Orange County Land Trust executive director, said the Land Trust intends to preserve the remaining 310 acres and provide the first-ever public access up the mountainside and a future trail system connecting Sugar Loaf Mountain to Goosepond Mountain State Park, a 1,700-acre park in Orange County operated by the Palisades Interstate Park Commission.

The home is co-listed by Jacob P. Matthews and Jody Atkinson of Nyack-based Ellis Sotheby’s International Realty. They described the listing as a “legacy property for the ages,” adding: “Woodside is one of the most inspiring real estate offerings to come to market in recent times. It is well-suited for entertaining guests and connecting with nature, given its abundant indoor and outdoor spaces and amenities.”

The home features many 19th- and 20th-century details, including hardwood floors in the front parlor rooms, vaulted beamed wood ceilings, walls of windows, a spacious, contemporary circa 1960s addition and two fireplaces that punctuate the large living and recreation rooms on the first and second levels. The home also includes an in-ground swimming pool, pool shed and dressing room.

Located in New York’s Lower Hudson Valley, Chester is 75 minutes from New York City and 30 minutes from New York Stewart International Airport.
The property is central to the hamlets and villages of Sugar Loaf, Monroe and Warwick as well as orchards, vineyards, Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center, Legoland, Woodbury Commons Outlets, Goshen Historic Track and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York.
